Announcing the First Annual Local Food & Sustainable Living Celebration
Sustainable South Shore, Edible South Shore Magazine and Go Green Web Directory wish to announce its first annual South Shore Celebration!, an event highlighting local food, green products and services, and sustainable living.
The purpose of the Celebration! is to serve as a clearinghouse for information on living sustainably, highlight the many green resources of the South Shore, and to provide a venue for networking among people and organizations who strive
to improve our quality of life. The festival, to be held on October 8th at the Marshfield Fairgrounds from 10am-4:30pm rain or shine, will feature the following: - Over 50 diverse vendors of local produce, healthy foods, and green products and services.
• Over 15 workshops running throughout the day providing useful information on various aspects of sustainable living such as cooking with local foods, canning, gardening, and / home weatherization.
• Kids' activities such as making products for the home, learning how a cranberry bog works, recycling games
• Delicious, healthy foods for sale
• Informative displays on sustainable living
• A home electronics recycling station
• Electric vehicle display
Ben Cowie-Haskell, President of Sustainable South Shore, wants to empower citizens to make informed decisions about their lifestyles and to provide information on sustainable living. “The South Shore is a beautiful place to live but we can’t take it for granted. The Celebration is intended to be a family event highlighting the many local, green resources we have access to. Living sustainably is really about using common sense so that we leave our children a better environment.”
Parking is free at the fairgrounds and entry to the Celebration is $3 for individuals and $6 for families. Visitors will find a festive atmosphere full of educational workshops, informational booths and local music. For a nominal fee people may bring their unwanted electronics (including cellphones, computers, microwaves) to be recycled in an environmentally-sound fashion by METECH one of the sponsors of the event. Other major sponsors include Solar City, Mass Environmental Trust, The Green Connection, and South Shore Organics.
The centerpiece of the event will include two large tents with over 50 vendors who will either be selling food, products, services and/or providing free information. The organizers hope to make this festival a model event for sustainability including low CO2 emissions and the recycling or composting of most waste. This is an all-volunteer, community supported event. Organizers hope to attract over 3,000 attendees and are actively soliciting sponsors.
The website for the event is www.southshorecelebration.com. Event collaborators are Edible South Shore (www.ediblecommunities.com/southshore ) magazine (Laurie Hepworth, editor, 781-582-1726) and Go Green Web Directory (www.gogreenwebdirectory.com ) (Paula Keif, founder, 877.304.4493)._
